This Swiss Carved "Black Forest" dog is modelled in standing pose, was carved about 1910 and he has on his collar a small brandy flask which actual dogs at the time carried to revive weary or lost alpine travellers. Catalogues of the period show a vast array of carved animals, principally bears, that were carved as furniture pieces and ornaments for the wealthy art patrons on their world tours. The Swiss town of Breinze was the centre of this popular carving industry and by 1910 there were some 1300 carvers plying their trade nearby. Ref. "Swiss Carvings, The Art of The Black Forest 1820-1940" by Arenski, et al, 2005. HxWxD= 190mm x 240mm x 80mm Condition: Overall very good, tail is repaired (glued), minor crack on the back.
