Art Deco Couch from the Metro Theatre

The once beautiful Art Deco style theatre known as The Metro was opened in 1939 in Hindley Street, Adelaide. It was built for MGM as part of a world-wide plan to create venues for their movies. Noted US theatre architect Thomas W Lamb designed the building in association with local architect F Kenneth Milne.

The interior of the building was gutted and much sold off at auction in 1975. The couch came from that sale. It was likely designed by Milne.

The couch comprises an elegant block footed lower section that supports a long base, for the 3 removeable cushions with upswept ends, veneered on the outside and upholstered inside. The back is also upholstered. The coverings are not original. Timbers used in the frame’s construction include Australian blackwood and walnut.  It is in fair condition.
